Mission:
Caverns of the mind
Location: Bridge
K'Tar came onto the bridge. Her hair was in a braid down her back, as it had been since she had joined Starfleet. Her uniform was neat and tidy, and her boots were polished till they shone. She headed to the tactical console where Lt Jansum normally would be if he were not on the planet.
She made eye contact with the captain and nodded, saying, "Sir," just before taking her station.
"Ensign K'Tar." Ka'Tock acknowledged her. " Glad to have you at Tactical; it should be a quiet shift, but with that said I should keep on guard."
K'Tar nodded, stepping up to the tactical station. "Weapons are on standby. Shields are ready to be raised on your order at any time. Running diagnostics in the meantime."
"I do not think we should need to be that aggressive." Ka'Tock said from the Center Chair. "What you can do is calibrate the targeting from the Space Platform to surface targeting." He suggested. "We are a small ship so having the best shot to hit where it hurts is our best chance in combat should it come to that."
K'Tar bristled. "If we lower weapons and shields, we will be caught unprepared if there is any attack."
Ka'Tock turned his chair to face the Tactical Officer. "Are you sure that the drain on our ship to maintain the weapons and shielding when there are no signs of combat is wise use of resources?" He said in a strong Klingon tone. "In combat you will have your weapons and shielding but while on a science mission I would rather have that power in sensory endeavors if you please?"
K'Tar hated it, and it showed, but she nodded. "Aye, sir." She lowered the shields and powered down phasers and disarmed the torpedoes. She did as he said and switched the targeting sensors from space to surface scanning. She noticed a discrepancy near the area where the away team was and then started to run a diagnostic.
Boudreau looked up from the Science station console where he'd been studying up on the Aurora and her science projects. Another Klingon? he was mildly surprised. He'd never encountered a Klingon officer before, and now there were two of them.
'Anything I can help with ma'am?' He asked when he saw the Klingon Security officer frown.
"There is a discrepancy on the planet near the away team," she said. "I am running a diagnostic to make certain it is not the sensors."
Ronen Kym was curious to see how the away team was doing, and to see the new Chief Science Officer who'd recently arrived. So she walked onto the bridge and found a place to stand at the back where she could both observe and be out of the way.
Looking up at the swish of the doors, Boudreau caught sight of the officer who took up station towards the rear. He flashed her an easy, companionable smile and returned to the problem that had been presented by the sensors. He made a mental note to check whether the science department had any Bajoran officers, just in case he'd blanked one of his own.
Kym smiled back. The new guy seemed nice, and competent. She watched him and the others work, observing their attitudes and overall mood.
Fingers dancing across the console, Boudreau made an adjustment to the harmonic frequency of the primary sensors, and ran a short test. Satisfied at the work, he waved in K'Tar's direction, 'Ensign, I think I may have removed the discrepancy ... if it's still appearing, it's something on the planet.'
The tall Klingon woman tried again, and nodded. It was fixed, and she nodded her thanks to the science officer.
"Do keep the Landing Party under observation as best you can." Ka'Tock suggested from his Command Chair. "The shuttle is their ticket back and forth and I want a lock on it at all times."
TAG
When the shuttle landed, Amber went straight to the bridge to report to the captain. She noticed a new officer sitting at science and nodded to him before turning to Ka'Tock. "We found the scientists. They've...devolved and are living with a primitive group of cave dwellers. I'll be analyzing the data we gathered to see if we can come up with an explanation."
"Very good. Keep me informed. Take Lieutenant Boudreau with you." He nodded to the man at science. "Our new Chief."
Amber turned to the science officer. "Welcome aboard. I'll fill you in on the way to science."
Boudreau set the sensors to perform a sweep every few cycles, then got to his feet, nodding at the Commander, 'yes ma'am - if you'll lead the way.' He tugged at his short beard as he assessed his first impressions of the striking, dynamic XO that had whirled on to the Bridge. Used to taking charge, he thought.
K'Tar saw Jansum come up to her post which she left for the secondary position at the back of the bridge.
"Thanks for keeping an eye on us, Ensign. Was the console acting up again?"
K'Tar bared her teeth at him. "Yes. I thought you told Ops to look at it."
Trei frowned at her. "Yes. Just before I left. It takes time."
She looked away, growling, and concentrated on her station.
