Mission: Caverns of the mind

[OLD]
Ka'Tock came to take his seat at the front of the Table.
"I thank everyone for getting here on such short notice." Ka'Tock began. I know we are all busy with the preparations for the Nebula Survey." He took a second to think. "I have just received word we are being rerouted to check in with an Observation Team that is not reporting back." Pressing the keys on his PADD on the table he brought up a holographic representation of the planet. "They are studying Cave dwellers so no elaborate outpost so it could be a simple problem but since no answer we are the closest ship."
[NEW]
Trei was the first to ask a question. "What is the animal life like there? There is one place on Betazed that, put simply for Humans, is like Australia on steroids. Or just like Q'oNoS," he said, gesturing to the captain, smiling.
"Planet 2471 does not have in the survey logs and dangerous indigenous creatures, there are predatory animals but they tend to be away from the Caves from what information I have." Ka'Tock replied. "There is not a Security detachment with the Science team thus I do not think we will be in much danger from all accounts relayed." he focused on the topical representation of the Outpost and the Caves being observed a Kilometer away at the forest edge. "I am thinking there is a clearing a click and a half west of the Outpost and nearly 2 klicks from the caves so not to be noticed." He explained. "This data is from a remote feed on the outpost; no manual response but the automatics are working."
Azusa was deep in thought. "Captain" she spoke up. "How is the atmosphere on this planet?" She asked. "I'm not sure if you know, but the Aurora is designed for planetary research and does have landing capabilities. If sending a shuttle or transporters is not an option, we could land in that clearing you mentioned. With the landing ramp, it would make loading equipment easier"
"I do not want to do anything rash." Ka'Tock put the atmospheric data up. "Class M and moderate temps in the area. I think beaming an away team to survey is best; the flight in of a shuttle is a bit too close to a Directive violation; these are Cave Dwellers. I think that least impact is best we send a survey team to see what is up with the outpost first then go from there." He suggested. "This being a Scientific study I think Lt. Oroyo ; as chief of Science, should be logical choice to lead the away team. With an Engineer to check systems, Medical and some Security to secure area just in case." Ka'Tock informed his options. "Though I am open to any ideas?"
"We should do a thorough scan of the planet before sending them down," Amber said. "That way they'll know more about what they may come across."
"Seems that Science is going to be really busy." Ka'Tock noted. "I want the best picture of what we are dealing with before I commit anyone to the Away Team."
"Sounds good to me," Oroyo said, trying not to sound too nervous about leading his first away team. "I agree with our new captain and the commander that we should do deep and intense scans of the planet before sending anyone down."
Despite that, he started to pull together a pool of officers that he wanted to take down with him when/if he was sent down.
"Doctor Nicoles." Ka'Tock looked to the acting CMO. "You might want to send someone on this Away Team just as a precaution?"
"Yew can bet on that one Commander Sir." She agreed. "Never know who might need some medical?"
"Jansum, you should be ready to have a detail go with the Away Team just in case?"
Trei nodded in acknowledgment, already thinking through the limited personnel he had, and trying to think of who he could spare on an away team. The K-9 unit was tempting, but he was getting some newbies who needed to get their feet wet.
"Though, I don't plan on getting anyone hurt, you never know how anything will go. Though, one never knows what medical needs the survey team will need," Xander agreed with both Nicoles and Jansum.
"I take it without knowing how those poor little Scientists are fairing up I will pack for worst case scenario." Nicoles added. "I take it when we are en Orbit I will be told better what is their condition... I mean scanning for life signs at the outpost and all?"
"That sounds like a given, Doctor, as well as standard protocol. Who would be going for your department?" Xander wondered.
"Why Little Ole me Lieutenant." Nicoles replied. "As acting chief it would be logical that I accompany the Away team as I could best evaluate the injuries or perform any testing that is required."
Pippa sat quietly, watching everyone speak. She was new to the ship and had yet to meet anyone, so this was her first chance to get a feel for the people she'd be working with.
The doors to the Conference Room opened as a man with an athletic build walked in. His uniform looked brand new, which only made him all the more uncomfortable, but what drew some attention was the small signs of tattoos protruding from the ends of his collar and sleeves. However, what was even more curious, was the white ferret he had on his shoulder. Both their heads seemed to shift from right to left, observing the looks from those already gathered around, before letting out a sigh and mock salute and making his way to an empty chair.
"Mister Deville." Ka'Tock noted the entrance. "It is so good to have our chief Helmsman attend the meeting... at last." He took a breath. "Get with Mercy for your background." Ka'Tock said calmly. "For the duration of this operation I will be assigning you the sole duty of keeping the shuttle ready for launch while you mind the Hangar Deck." He nod. "Assign someone to the Gamma Shift Bridge duty. And please choose someone who is mindful of shift timetables.
