1,131 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Caverns of the mind
Location: Conference Room

ON

Ka'Tock had gotten the change of orders; a week into the new mission and distance covered to charting a nebula only to have new orders. A new new Command Chain; some replacement crew and outfitting to make sure the Aurora is in her tip top shape.

Ka'Tock had taken the orders from Fleet Command in the Ready Room; he should start referring to it as 'his' ready room but that will come in time, getting used to that chair in the center of the Bridge was his first goal.

"Do all captains talk to their Task Force Command one a week it seemed?" is a question he wondered about but decided it had to do with his new Command.

Going to that chair he assigned the new course to Helm and Navigation; the Sciences were all ready ramping up for the survey and their new mission are still Science based so no need to change their operations this second.

=^= Department heads to a New Mission Briefing in one half hour.=^= he put across the network.

Then he assigned the Helm Officer; as senior of the Bridge Crew Officers, to take the Bridge as he went to make arrangements for the meeting; his human Yeoman seeming in tow.

[25 minutes later, Conference Room]

Ka'Tock stood at the rear of the room looking out the Portal, he had never really been this deep into the Conference Room; he had not progressed that far along the pecking order of the Table being a counselor he remained near the back to observe and gain insights.

The Yeoman; a red haired human, had made sure to have coffee, tea and other refreshments at a table on the rear wall. Ka'Tock had insisted; maybe a bit much from his days as a Counselor and wanting to have a more comfortable atmosphere. This is not a 'war room counsel' but just explaining the parameters of a new mission that would not have the Science Vessel going into combat.

"Everything is ready Sir." Mercy Scott said from the unobtrusive corner near his chair at the head of the table.

"You have done very well Mercy, thank you." He complemented.

It would take some time to get the workings between them ironed out, she was an adept girl at what she did and it was just letting her get to know his habits that will take the time to establish and work with.

Ka'Tock would wait patiently; not showing any weakness of nerves in his expression or body language.

Amber was the first to arrive. "You ready for this?" she asked.

"I was going for that Command regal type stance; give them hope I am prepared for this." He glanced over his shoulder. "I am not a fan of the Brooding Commander with the weight of the crew upon my shoulders." He chuckled. "For the record I am as ready as I can be for this."

"Good. I don't go for either the brooding commander or the regal one. Just be yourself. Respect your crew and they'll respect you," she said encouragingly.

The doors swished open and the young black haired woman stepped through. Azusa had been working hard, sometimes pulling double shifts while ironing out the bugs on the ships refit. Her tunic was unzipped showing the yellow undershirt underneath and her hair hadn't been tied up in her usual twin tails style.

She held in her hand a large cup of coffee, steaming hot and with extra sugar. "Ohayo... I mean, good morning" she said with a yawn before taking a seat at the table.

"Good morning, Lieut...err I mean, Captain. Oh, Lieutenant Nakano, I didn't see you there. How are you?"

Azusa looked up from her coffee and gave the science officer a small smile. "Coffee..." she said. "Fuel for the engineering department at the moment..." she added hoping that would explain it all.

Oroyo chuckled at the comment, reading the Engineer's intent entirely. He then took a new seat near the new Captain's side. Feeling a little out of place, he settled into the new seat trying not to look as uncomfortable as he felt.

"Good morning," Amber said to Azusa and Xander.

Trei walked in last, talking with the temporary Department head for Helm. "I still say Yuli Breim is the one to watch. He's been playing better than anyone else this year, and I really think he can win the championship."

"Really..." Helmsman Jones shook his head. "That Andorian guy I'seealli; I think he is new but he is the top rookie and an up and comer." He countered.

Trei grabbed some raktajino and a muffin saying, "Breim has experience on his side. He's pretty new himself, but he's got a couple years' experience and that will make a difference. It's not just the game, it's the pressure and the flak that you get as a player that he's got to deal with. I'seealli hasn't dealt with that yet; Breim has."

Nicoles came through the doors; still in her blue coat over the skirted uniform. She had her PADD in hand as she moved to a seat; as Deputy Chief Medical Officer she was doing the Chief's job until relieved.

"Top of the morning y'all." Nicoles greet as she took her seat.

Trei looked over at the young woman. She was pretty, but not his type. She also seemed overdoing it as far as the 'lady' manners were concerned. He had known women like the entire time he was on Betazed, including his mother, grandmother, and aunts. He thanked the Four Deities everyday that Lanaila was not like that. He was inclined to dislike the woman, but as a department head, he was bound to give her a chance. He gave her a smile and nodded. "Good morning." Then he turned back to what Jones was saying until the captain got the meeting going.

Ka'Tock came to take his seat at the front of the Table.

"I thank everyone for getting here on such short notice." Ka'Tock began. I know we are all busy with the preparations for the Nebula Survey." He took a second to think. "I have just received word we are being rerouted to check in with an Observation Team that is not reporting back." Pressing the keys on his PADD on the table he brought up a holographic representation of the planet. "They are studying Cave dwellers so no elaborate outpost so it could be a simple problem but since no answer we are the closest ship."
