Mission: Caverns of the mind

[CONTINUED]

"Come in. No need to be shy" she said with a smile. "Its good for you to be back home. I've got Commodore Kayano on comms for you too. She's the Task Force commander in this sector" she said. A large screen to the side of the desk flicked on and the green haired woman appeared.

[NEW]

"Nice to see you all back safe and sound... I hope" Kayano said. "You'll have to excuse my absence, the Yamato is on a deep space assignment on the other side of the sector at the moment. But as soon as Commodore Misaki contacted me I made sure to give you some time" she said. She raised a cup of tea to her lips and took a sip.

'You didn't know we were coming," Amber said to Kayano. "So I hardly expect you to be here."

She turned to the Admiral. "Thank you for seeing us."

"Thank you both." Ka'Tock added.

Kaede nodded on the viewscreen. "Admiral Misaki mentioned something about wanting to talk to us about the Captain of the Aurora?" she asked. "Its unusual for two officers to come to command officers with such a request..."

Ka'Tock was here for moral support of Amber as she brought the Captain's situation to the Command Staff here.

Amber explained succinctly about Daniel spending most of his time in his ready room and leaving command to her, and how she felt he just needed a break.

Ka'Tock had a few things he could say about the Captain outside the confidences; not bringing anything but his 'concurring with the assessment of Commander Quinn and adding a little to the 'additional pressures that were to be expected considering the situation and how it could tax even the most 'seasoned' of Officers. He gave Admiral Janeway's taking a leave between her reassignments as a perfect example of how the extreme command demands could have an effect upon the Captain. In the end it was just shown that the added stress could cover the behavior as 'Part of the Command Stress Syndrome that is a basis for judging when a Command Grade Officer could use some down-time to keep the Officer sharp in the future.

Both Kaede and Akeno listened with interest. There was a few seconds of awkward silence before Kaede spoke up.

"So it looks as if we'll need a new Commanding Officer for the Aurora" she said. "You two are the most senior and qualified. I can grant a field promotion here and now while command deal with all the paperwork" she said looking at them both.

"With all due respect," Amber began. "I'm a scientist. I'm okay being first officer, because I can still assist with science from time to time, but I have no desire to take command on a permanent basis." In spite of what Daniel wanted.

"I have an idea..."

[Bridge USS Aurora]

Lieutenant Xander Oroyo was in the command chair of the USS Aurora watching over the bridge. His bridge crew consisted of a handful of officers and several more non-coms. At present, he was the only senior officer on the bridge.

Being a science officer in command (albiet simulated command), he was surprisingly serene. Almost like he was born for this but he had never assumed even in his dizziest day dreams that this would happen. You see, he had never dreamed about being in command of a starship.

He was an odd bird even by Starfleet standards. His specialty was cosmological topology which was a relatively new branch of stellar cartography. Cosmological Topology was a new way of mapping the known galaxy, and even the known universe, by laying out current maps over the current known topology.

Up until today, no one else had studied this topic in such detail. Oroyo was looking to make a name for himself. And it looked like he was doing just that. He was Chief Science Officer not on a deep space explorer but on a frigate assigned to the inner Federation. And of that, he was proud.

[Turbolift]

It was several minutes later that Commander Quinn and Ka'Tock were heading out of the Ready Room taking the turbo lift towards the shuttle bay.

"Were you expecting that outcome?" Ka'Tock said as they rode down. "You realize that we will have to have the COmmand Codes updated once we touch down?" HE glanced to Quinn. "You want to handle that in the Aurora Ready Room or when we disembark from the shuttle?"

"Actually, I'm relieved to have it over and done with," Amber said. "I hope this gives Daniel what he wants. I admit, I need the distance." She smiled. "As for changing the codes, we can't do that until the transfer is official. It may take a day or two for the paperwork to be finalized and get the stamp of approval from Starfleet Command."

"That is good as I should let my appointments for the morrow and one more day of life being as it was before transition will be nice." He commented. "I think we need a normal day before springing changes upon the crew don't you think?"

"Yes. We should let them celebrate being home. As they said, we're not far from Earth. That will give the crew some shore leave, and us time for repairs. We can announce the change when we arrive. But I can show you around your new ready room now, if you'd like, so you have time to get familiar with it."
