1,273 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: Caverns of the mind
Location: Sickbay

Jax walked into Sickbay with Gunnar and looked around for a nurse or doctor. They both needed their yearly inoculations and Gunnar had torn his left front boot and he wanted to make certain that his foot was okay.

Nicoles had been puttering about getting things more ready for the Operations; she made sure the needed medical supplies were either replicated and stored or the imported supplies were also in place. She was just closing a cabinet when she saw a Secrity Lieutenant and a very handsome dog.

"Howdy y'all." She said with a smile as she approach. "I am Doctor Nicoles, what can I do for yew today?"

Jax reached down and patted Gunnar's head. "Sit." The dog sat on his haunches. "Gunnar and I both need our yearly inoculations, and his boot tore earlier today. I'd like to make sure he's okay, just in case."

"Well now it is not often I get tew gentlemen in my sick bay." She said with her southern Drawl. "Which one of you darlins wants to go first?"

"Let's start with Gunnar," Jax suggested. "Let me put him up on the biobed." Jax leaned down, and lifted Gunnar up onto the nearest empty biobed and ordered him to lay down. The dog did, head up and ears alert, looking at the newcomer calmly.

"Well now I get to check the Pretty boy first." She told the dog and offered a hand for him to scent, speaking with an even tone while not making any abrupt movements until his tail made movement. "Yew are a pretty boy, that's fo'sure." She asked the dog. "Can yew shake Gunnar?"

She offered the dog her hand and the left front paw came up." The scan of it showed to be okay as she had already deduced that because no yip or other painful reaction.

"Was it his left front?" She asked Jax.

"Yes, ma'am. His boot tore, and I wanted to make sure. Probably just overreacting, but better safe than sorry."

"I can fix that little Ole problem..." She snapped her fingers. "Small ships need efficiency..."

"Please State the nature of the Medical Emergency." The voice of the female EMH inquired.

"Please insert Veterinary Mode and see to this Handsome Furry Gentleman." Nicoles instructed while giving the Dog a good scratch behind the ears. "She will take care of yew Big Guy." She winked.

"As you wish..." The eyes blinked several times. "Programming adapted." She moved to Gunnor, giving a hand that she had made sure to add a scent for him; the subroutine suggested a light perfume of flowers.

Gunnar gave his left front paw after sniffing, his demeanor perfectly calm.

"Now Yew..." Nicoles put her arm in his. "Can step wright over hwere to a biobed?"

Jax let himself be steered over to the biobed, but didn't want to be poked and prodded. "Ma'am, I just need a few vaccines, not a full physical."

Nicoles changed her course and took him to a chair and offered it to him. "If Yew will take this seat I will get the needles."

Jax paled. "Needles!? What happened to hyposprays!?"

"I hope y'all not going tell me how to do my Doctorin are you?" She winked as she retrieved her gear.

Jax gulped as he eyed the needles. "Those are awfully big needles." His arms already hurt.

"These little ole things." Nicoles smiled and approached ti it in hand and placed the two large needled in the extendable tray beside them. "Lucky you are not a Klingon,, those are bigger. " SHe took out her Tricorder and probe to start her scan. "So what is the state of your medical emergency?" SHe grinned. 'That is usually what it takes for me to get Security Personnel in here?"

"Nothing for me. I'm just a worrywart when it comes to Gunnar. But we both do need our vaccines."

"I kind of got that by the little tool I have here." She smiled while putting it down and picking up one of the needles. "As I thought , you need the routine vaccinations, you will hardly feel this." She displayed the needle and squirt a little liquid out where he could really get a good look at it.

Jax gulped and then braced himself as she prepared to stick the needle in his arm. He gasped preparing for the feeling of the long, thin piece of metal pierce his flesh. "I thought you said I would hardly feel it?" he asked, his voice strained.

With Nicoles Off hand she put the hypospray into him and gave him the inculcation required. "See you hardly felt a thing. She smiled and put the needle away.

Jax scowled at her. "You could have just said--" He grabbed the side of the biobed. "Feeling dizzy. What did you put in that thing?"

Nicoles did not have time to shake her head; why is it that men wanted to faint around needles, the inoculation material should not cause dizzyness; but needles were known to down the biggest of men upon the correct occasion. Nicoles eased him to a prone position on the biobed.

"Why do men scare at sight of needles?" She asked as the Tricorder had not reacted so he had to be okay, just faint. Mr Jax, it was a minor booster and vitamin enhancement." She started. "Why did yew not tell me you are afraid of needles?"

"It's not the needles. Did you put in the usual one for Typherian flu? That's the one I have a reaction to."

"You really should have put that in the records; might have had you lay on the bed..." She tried to help him rise and keep him steady until she moved with him to the biobed. "Climb up here please."

Jax laid back, feeling woozy. "It should have already been in my records. I knew the last doctor was a quack." He closed his eyes, hoping that would help the lightheadedness and the dizziness.

Taking out another hypospray she loaded it with a little bit of medicine for the queasiness and would help the body absorb what could be a minor allergic reaction, this medicine would also help with the adverse reaction to the inoculation. Had it been in his records she would have added this in his dosage to help with the effects, she will be sure to add this to his records.

"This will fix yew right up in a couple of minutes." Nicoles assured. "We will give Gunnar another treat and y'all just rest for a moment or tew."

Nicoles gave him a smile and a wink. 'So'kay Darlin, just rest a bit." She nod to him.

"Thanks, doc," Jax replied weakly. Gunnar looked over and whined. His two-legs was hurting.

"Poor Baby." The EMH checked the wounds and used a Dermal re generator to fix the small abrasions on the paws.

Soon, Gunnar was happily crunching a treat and having his ear scratched fondly by the EMH when the subtle hiss of the hypo spray was injected into the dog by the deft hands of the EMH.

"You are a good boy." The Hologram praised the dog.

Gunnar's tail wagged across the biobed, knocking a few instruments on the floor.

"And such a strong boy too." The EMH was having what her subroutine programmed as a 'sun time' with the dog.

Jax slept off the effects of the hypo while Gunnar happily munched on treats.
