Mission:
Taking Wing
Location: The Aurora
Timeline: Once everything is fixed!
ON
Main Bridge, Aurora
"The waverider has re-docked with the saucer section, sir," the operations officer confirmed.
"Excellent," Daniel said, dropping into his command chair. "Let's get all systems powered up, and see if we can't try talking to the lifeform again. Please summon the away team to the bridge."
Amber received the summons and quickly made her way from science to the bridge. Assuming that Nastari would take the science station, she took her seat next to the Captain. Unfortunately it brought her in too close a proximity for her comfort. she really needed to deal with being dumped before it hindered her ability to perform her job.
Trei took his place at the tactical station over from Hernandes, keeping his mouth shut about the waves of discomfort he was sensing from someone on the bridge. Not his place to say anything, but his first instinct was to protect people. That was why he was in security.
"Shields are ready, sir," he reported.
Djeneba was in the science department at one of the consoles there. Nastari reviewed the last set of scans when the summons had been received. She stood from the station when someone called out to her. "Lieutenant Nastari before you go can you look at these results?"
Djeneba nodded and replied "Certainly" she moved over to peer over the shoulder of the other member of the science department who sat at the console there. Her arrival to the bridge would be a bit delayed but she assumed that as always there was someone usually stationed on the bridge to handle anything the Captain required of the science department so she was not worried and Commander Quinn would probably be able to assist if needed and was probably in her seat even as the two looked over the latest results of scans of the lifeform. "This is coming from the bridge?" Nastari asked
"Yes Lieutenant Nastari" the other replied and Djeneba relaxed a bit more about her late arrival to the bridge.
An unfamiliar figure joined the crew of the USS Aurora on the bridge. While not seated at any station, the blonde haired Trill positioned herself to the side so that she was available should anyone require her assistance. For the moment, she simply observed the group and their exchanges with one another. The reference to a lifeform certainly caught her attention, as did the palpable tension between first officer and captain.
Amber noticed Kizre arrive and gave her a smile of welcome.
Trei nodded and smiled at the new arrival before returning his attention to his console.
"Lieutenant," the captain nodded in greeting to Lieutenant Viiar's arrival on the bridge.
"Science is ready Captain." A dark haired woman named
The comm system chirped.
"Engineering is ready" Azusa's voice said. "We've unlocked the shield controls to you. Changing the frequencies manually may put on extra stress on the emitters, so I have engineering teams standing by to keep them running smoothly for you" she explained.
"All systems report ready, sir," Amber said when she'd received confirmation from the other departments.
"Then let's approach. Helm, set course for the lifeform, ahead slow. Stop us a hundred kilometers short and then Lieutenant Jansum can open... ahem, hailing frequencies."
"Sir," the operations officer spoke, looking up from their console. "Since the away team's report mentioned omicron radiation, I began sweeping for it - and it appears as though the omicron radiation is emitting from either the lifeform or the star - it's hard to pinpoint, though."
"Good to know," Daniel said, standing up. His tone was grave. "Shields up, then. Let us proceed cautiously."
"It might be a little too late sir..." the ops officer frowned, looking up. "I've received word from Medical that several crewmen are already reporting symptoms of acute radiation sickness, including most of the medical staff. We spent six hours in fairly close proximity to the lifeform and the star, relying only on navigational deflectors rather than shields while we repaired... we were much closer than the planet. The Doctor is among those incapacitated."
Trei grimaced. "Shields are up, sir. Hopefully they'll keep us from getting an even worse sunburn."
"I don't think it's the entity," Amber said. "We never had a problem with it before. However, the sun is sending out more radiation. Science has analyzed the data and it definitely appears to be the sun."
Jansum scowled. "The metaphasic shields are on, but I don't know how long we'll able to stand it."
Ka'Tock entered the bridge from the turbo Lift, moving down to stand near the in.
"Sorry for the delay sir, I was securing the shuttle." He offered his explanation for his not being there sooner. "I see we are heading for a hot time, Sir."
Amber walked over to Operations. "When we communicate with the entity, we use sound and mathematics. I can help with what we communicate. I'll need you to send out the sound wave."
The Operations officer nodded, tapping at the console in order to set things up for communication. "Ready, Commander."
After the briefing, Kizre didn't know what to expect of the space entity that had been described. On the bridge, with the amoeboid creature on the view screen, she was overcome with what could only be described as awe. Stepping forward to get a better look, she observed it's movements for a minute before turning her attention back to the crew.
"We believe it is attempting to consume the sun, correct?" She spoke out loud. They'd planned to deter it's actions to protect the planet as best they could. If the sun itself was causing the unfortunate radiation poisoning, however, leaving it intact would only lead to a more disastrous end to Nal'Daya's inhabitants.
"Some do," Amber said. "Not all of us."
There was something else going on there - something that Kizre couldn't quite place. Tapping her fingertip to the bridge of her nose, she paced a couple steps before speaking again. "Has it focused it's attention to any part of the sun in particular?" It was a long shot, but if this space-slug shared any of the characteristics of the giant snails on Trill, it was possible that some kind of radula might have scraped away the surface in its attempts to consume the sun. The damage may have been invisible to the naked eye, but perhaps they could get a scan to help visualize what had been done?
"Can we focus a scan on the portion of the sun most targeted by the entity?"
