1,070 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Caverns of the mind
Location: Sick Bay

ON

Nicoles was busing herself with the adaptation of the Sick Bay pharmaceutical supplies. She had to get an inventory of the ready stock so that she could get replenishment while in dock. She had a minor break between patients.

It was turning out to be a steady day; easy to keep herself busy, and all of this was her new job until replaced by an Official CHief Medical Officer.

SHe was bending at the waist and knees shifted to the left and together as she checked the bottom two shelves. A lady is very aware of her skirt and unmentionables.

The doors of sickbay swished open and Kuroko strode in. "Hey Doc. I'm here for.... my.... medic..." she stared at Tessa. "Seriously? Are you the only one on duty now?" She asked.

Slowly Nicoles rose to her full height in the heels she wished were higher, turning to face Kuroko the struggle not to lash out was hard for her.

"I am a medical doctor after all and this 'Is' a Sick Bay, where am I ot be ..." Her hands were on her hips before she thought. "Engineering?" She took a step forward and leaned closer slightly. "Do I make any defamatory remark about when you are on duty prancing about the ship guarding?" A bit closer. "Or is it I am supposed to be still dead and yew are talking to my ghost?"

Kuroko smiled at her. "Same as always" she said. "I need my physical done" she replied simply. "I would rather a person do it that's not a ghost, so out all that crap aside shall we?" She asked. She was dedicated to her duties and this wasn't the time for arguing. "Where do you want me?"

"That biobed behind yew will dew fine, just sit up on the Bed and this will not take long." Nicoles said while her posture straightened and she calmed herself. "Is there any new conditions, colds or other information not in the current records that I should know about?"

Nicoles had her tricorder in hand; she ahd been doing her residency when the two of them had been... Nicoles did not want to go there lest to say she knew Kuroko's physical condition very well at the time. Of course Nicoles was more mature over that doctor resident trainee, she had passed with flying colors and assigned to a fine ship that only now seemed small. Why in God's name had Kuroko been brought here to 'This' ship now when her heart trouble had just began to heal over after three years?

"Nothing that I can think of. Maybe a broken heart like... but thats apparently not important" Kuroko said simply as she hopped up onto the biobed.

A Lady does not show anything but the fine nature of her upbringing; not even to intimate friends of the past, and Nicoles would be Damned if she would weaken at the sight of Kuroko. The Probe scanning the patient was automatic, starting at her head and downward slowly.

"I am seeing that yew appear no worst for the wear after the loss of a ship?" She caught Kuroko's gaze for the second; or was it longer as she lingered in the depth of Kuroko's eyes; the depth of the color surrounded by the small bits of captured light acting like twinkling starts in the sky near dusk. "I-I mean yew were not disfigured during the..." She had to keep calm as she moved her own gaze finally broke contact. "events and abandoning of ship?" The probe readings were her escape she would concentrate on reading the tricorder and not have to look Kuroko in the eyes again.

"Everything went smoothly" Kuroko replied. "Well..." she looked up at Tessa, realized she was blushing and sharply turned away. "Almost everything..." she said in a faint whisper hardly audible.

"Ah am glad you got away clear." Nicoles was continuing to scan Kuroko. "Some of the crew were not so fortunate I know that several were horribly marred; others spent months in rehabilitation and cosmetic repair." She did not make eye contact. "Is there anything ah Should know?" She asked. "Health wise I mean."

"Same" Kuroko replied. "And none that I can think of" she added. She looked up at Tessa and pulled a small smile. "The Charlotte was a good ship... it was a... shame"

Nicoles froze for a second; her hands did not shake but her eyes widened as the flash of memory of her being in a crumbling Triage trying to get patients out, the beams that fell... her diving to protect the Ensign with plasma burns and the pressure so intense she blacked out...

"Y-yes she had good people...." Nicoles said and continued her probe. "Yew appear to be in order, health wise." Nicoles replaced the probe and closed her tricorder. "AH see yew had a check at the receiving Station before transfer and the readings are similar enough to say yew have not gotten injured in between the testing so Yew can be cleared for duty." She said in a near monotone. "try to stay away from plasma tubes and you should live to be an old woman."

Kuroko nodded as she hopped down from the biobed. "Thanks" she said. "Anything else you need me for?" she asked.

"A lady does not answer trick questions." Nicoles asked. "But from a Medical point of view yew are cleared to return to your preferred place, You may move about protecting the crew as yew see fit."

Kuroko nodded again. "That I shall do..." she stopped. "ALL of the crew" she added before making her way towards the door. She stopped just before it opened. "If you're not busy later... I'll buy dinner". Before Tessa could answer Kuroko stepped through the doors and out into the corridor.

the slight echo of something hitting the doors, it sounded broken in that nanosecond after impact.

"O-H Y-E-W..." Nicoles growled after throwing the tricorder; the only thing she had in her hand and stomped her foot as her hands went to her hips. "When Pigs Fl-igh..." She yelled and looked at the broken tricorder and stomped her foot in anger. "That was my favorite..." She shook her head. "You owe me a tricorder..." She called knowing no one heard her."
