Mission: Taking Wing

Trei walked back to his quarters, beat up and bruised, but not too bad. Some of the security staff had needed to go to Sickbay which wasn't great because there was no chief doctor. He sat on his couch and took off his boots and sock, wincing at the pain. He could use a shower, but he didn't rule out a bath so he could soak his feet.

Instead of cooking like he usually did, he replicated a bowl of stew and some bread that he had had someone program into the system. It was his great grandmother's recipe, and he loved it. He sopped up some of the juice with the bread and took a bite. Sitting down at the table with his food and a glass of uttaberry and blackberry mead, he went over reports of prisoners over the last month. A couple of people in the brig for a lovers' quarrel and nothing else. The scintillating facts bored him almost to tears. Boy buys girl a dress. She doesn't like it. He offers to take it back. She flips out. And on and on. Sometimes he worried about the newbies.

I should probably call Vien. Haven't talked to him since he transferred.

He recycled the dishes and then sat at his desk and entered a command to call his cousin on the Erebus on Earth.

He waited and then his cousin's face came on the screen. They both smiled at the same time. Vien and his brother Daln and Trei's brother Ranel looked like triplets to most people, but Trei never had any trouble telling them apart. There were differences in the way they talked and held themselves, subtle, yes, but they were there.

Trei, how are you? Vien asked.

Trei nodded, smiling. I'm doing well. I'm stationed aboard the Aurora as chief of security. It's a small ship, a Nova class science ship. We just got done helping this creature bring down the radiation from a sun.

Vien looked confused. What sort of creature?

Trei smiled and shrugged. I have no idea. All I know is it is a spaceborne life form that eats solar energy. And that it's big and ugly, he said, chuckling.

Vien shook his head. You always were a joker. Sometimes I wonder why you joined Starfleet if you weren't curious about other lifeforms.

Trei looked jokingly offended. Who says I'm not? I'm hurt. I'm really hurt.

Vien rolled his dark eyes. Okay, okay.

The comm beeped on Vien's side. He checked the computer, and smiled. He looked back at Trei and said, Hold on a second

He pressed a few buttons, and another familiar face appeared alongside Vien. She smiled, the same smile as Trei and Vien. Lanaila was dressed in a little black dress with red and white diamond jewelry and her dark hair tumbled around her shoulders.

Hi, boys,She said cheerfully. How are you both?

Trei scowled. Naila, don't you think you could put some clothes on?

Naila rolled her dark eyes. I'm going to a party, Trei. It's not like I dress like this everyday.

No, just every weekend Vien said, his voice full of laughter.

Trei scowled. He didn't like Naila dressing like that, even if she was a grown woman. What was wrong with sleeves? Naila and Vien laughed at the expression on Trei's face.

Trei tried to tone down the scowl and was only partly successful. I had just called Vien to tell him about my promotion.

Promotion? Naila and Vien asked at the same time.

Trei smiled proudly. I am now second officer of the USS Aurora.

"Congratulations!" both Naila and Vien said both ways at the same time.

Trei winced a little. Thanks, guys. He looked off to the screen and sighed. I better go. A couple of ensigns are getting into an argument. Gotta take care of that before it evolves into something else. Love you guys, and see you soon.

He shut off the comm and put his boots back on before heading out.

Lt Trei Jansum
Chief Sec/Tac Officer
Second Officer
USS Aurora
