'Brilliant, Doctor, lay them all out,' Boudreau looked at both women as the samples were laid out, 'so if we put our brains together, I'm sure we can come up with a reason why this is happening.' He clapped his hands together, 'so,' his excitement was growing, 'suppression of the higher brain function suggests something is blocking them. But what exactly?'
[NEW]
"These samples are barest, I did not get real detailed scans." Nicoles informed. "Getting samples when they sleep would do me better or having a probe scan over time mi-ght yield a greater sample content. What we have here is sample of dirt and air samples and some of the varied fungi on walls with algae that includes cave dust as well."
'Alright, these are a good start - what tests have you run them through,' Boudreau asked approvingly.
"Ah ran the filter for particulates through the parameters, the tempature iz fine; a little cold but they have fires and I check that these fires are not enough smoke as they are close to the opening enough for adiquate ventalation. WHat scans I got were put through the Scientists base-line and they are heavily in the Primal Brain firing at double what it should and has oh-ver rid-den the Primary brain in all cases. Their readings are nearly spot on with the inhabitants."
"Have you checked the away team to see if there were any changes in their scans?" Kym asked.
"As far as AH can tell, no one is oddly out of their normal brain waves or bio-chemi-cal balance. " Ah wonder if some insect or the l-i-k-e may be the cul-prit?"
"I haven't noticed any behavioural changes," Kym added. "At least, not yet."
"With that Mis-ter De-Ville it is hard to tell , but Ah think he is just Onery as his nature." Nicoles noted. "May-Bee it is because none of us have been bitten if it is carried that whay, or it could be some ele-ment in the water, Ah did not have chance to get sample of the water from the caves?"
'Did the science team get their water from the cave?' asked Boudreau, dubiously, 'it took time for them to degenerate, which suggests that whatever affected them had time to build up in their system ... but I can't see that if they followed protocol they would have degenerated from a water source.' He shrugged, 'personally that is. People do get lax.'
Boudreau was, however, interested in the idea that an insect may have infected the science crew, and set the computer to search for any instances where they may have come across one.
"Ah noticed a pool within the scan range but did not get around to it as we were on an initial entry and then returned." Nicoles explained. "With the cave being al-wayze occ-upied we will have to work during their sleep or find other ways to get to it without the occ-upants finding us?"
Kym glanced at Remy. "Did anyone get a water sample during the last trip?"
He flipped up a padd and consulted it, looking through the logged inventory from the previous trip, 'yeah ... seems Commander Quinn took a sample.' he tapped a few keys on the padd, 'let's show it up on the screen ...'
The breakdown of the water sample was thrown up in front of the three officers.
'Interesting ...' he highlighted a section of the molecular breakdown of he liquid and what it carried, 'not sure that that is normal - seems to be a compound dissolved within the water of the planets. Definitely not H or O ...'
"Should we'all let the Spectrum Analyzer chew away on it? Nicoles asked. "Might take a bit but we might get an answer we understand?"
'Alright,' Boudreau moved the sample and the data remotely to the Spectrum Analyzer and set it to sift through the planet's liquid. 'Shouldn't take too long now,' he said confidently, folding his arms and waiting. 'I'm willing to bet a latinum strip that this is radiation.' He waggled his eyebrows at the women, daring them to take up his bet.
"A lady does not gamble." Nicoles said, covering her chest in mock surprise.
"Not latinum," Kym said, taking the bait, "But perhaps something more interesting?"
Boudreau narrowed his eyes and nodded with a smile, 'something more interesting then ...' The machine continued to beep away in the background as it worked on the sample.
"Dinner, or breakfast?" Kym suggested.
'Dinner, I think,' replied Boudreau warily. 'Are you sure you don't want in Doctor Nicoles?'
"Ah do not gamble nor do Ah answer the call when a person has a Sure Thing." Nicoles raised an eyebrow. "I think yew two should be the Gamblers here as three is considered a crowd for Dinner and all."
Kym chuckled. "You're welcome to join us. We can call it a celebratory dinner when we get this mystery solved." She wouldn't mind having dinner alone with Remy, but that could always be arranged after his evaluation.
'Sure, the more the merrier,' replied Boudreau. 'This is taking the longest time to process,' he said, as he fiddled with some of the settings, 'the computer is struggling to pick up this mystery compound.'
To help, Kym pulled up the readings from the atmosphere for comparison. "I believe the atmosphere has been ruled out. If we can rule out the water, should we move on to plants and animals?"
He nodded, 'yeah if we have any samples or scans we can process, that's a good idea - did we collect anything Doctor Nicoles?'
"We were only in a few hours and returned so mah samples and readings were not more than what I brought." She replied.
"Commander Quinn took some, and Lieutenant Jansum may have taken others, but there isn't much," Kym added. "Not yet, anyway."
'Oh-kay, then' Boudreau replied slowly, keying in the fact to his padd, 'if we work with what we've got, it may give us some answers, although we'll probably need a wider range of samples to test.'
Pulling up the data logged by Jansum and Quinn, Boudreau fed it into the program the Main Computer was running, and waited for the results. 'Lots of dead time when investigating scientific phenomenon,' he remarked.
"Waiting isn't a problem," Kym said. "This should give you a baseline for your next trip to the planet."
He smiled, 'this is quite true.'
The computer warbled a negative tone, and announced dispassionately, 'insufficient data to proceed.' Boudreau flashed the others a quick look, irritation mixed with annoyance.
He cleared his throat and asked, calmly, 'Computer, clarify?'
'Insufficient data to proceed with sample analysis. Further samples required.'
Boudreau sighed and folded his arms, 'I guess that means we're definitely heading planetside.'
"I'm not sure if I should say sorry or not,' Kym replied. "It is the only way you're going to get more information."
'Nah, no need to say sorry,' Boudreau grinned, 'I get to go on an adventure, it's why we're here, right?'
Kym grinned. "Right."
