Visiting Home

Posted on Thu May 23rd, 2019 @ 4:34pm by Lieutenant Xander Oroyo DSci & Ensign Dehvon Raynah

1,021 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Caverns of the mind
Location: Ornara
Timeline: Shore Leave

As Lieutenant Oroyo and Ensign Raynah stepped out of the Runabout Tesla, Raynah squinted at the intense sunlight, "My god, how did you grow up with this brightness?"

"Well when you grow up in the intense magnetic B-type star, you get used to it," Oroyo chuckled. "Welcome to Ornara, Dehvon. This is not the planet the Federation came into contact with in the mid-24th century. We have come a long way from that point. As you can see, we have rediscovered art, architecture, and science. Over there is the Academy where yours truly received his doctorate in cosmological cartography.

"Could we visit the school? I would love to meet some of your professors. Xander," Dehvon asked.

"Who is this?" said a familiar voice from behind the pair. "Xander, my my, how you've come up in the world."

"Pellum, what are you doing here?" Xander asked the new person behind them without even turning around.

"Dehvon Raynah, I'd like to introduce Pellum Rayne, my ex-husband," Xander said hanging his head in shame.

"Xander, you never...how could you keep this a secret from me?" the not-so-young ensign asked.

"Dehvon, this was a whole different life for me. I tried to run as far away from this planet and this life as I could. You don't understand and you never could," Xander said as he began to cry.

"You never even gave me a chance, Xander. I'm a telepath, remember? I could have helped you with this pain you're so obviously in," Dehvon said plaintively as he put a hand on his partner's shoulder.

"Thank you and I have never forgotten about your being a Betazoid. Let's go get something to eat. Pellum, would you like to join us?"

"I thought you'd never ask. There is this wonderful eatery right around the corner where Xander proposed to me the first time," Pellum said laughing.

"The first time?!" Dehvon said.

After they all ate and Pellum had embarrassed Xander enough, he and Dehvon left for Xander's home to see his parents. Dehvon looked as nervous, if not more, than Xander did. Though he understood why Xander did what he did, Dehvon still couldn't understand one thing; where Xander's brother fit into all of this. "So, can i expect anymore surprises today?" Dehvon asked his new partner.

"To be honest; I'm not sure, Dehvon. The emotions could run the gamut from 'Oh, we're so happy you're not dead' to 'How could you leave like that? We never want to see you again.' I'm just not sure where they are in the emotional spectrum. My parents any my twin brother have always been a little different.

"Ever since our people came up with a cure for felicium, most of our people have spent the last century coming down from the addiction but my family 'owned' their addiction and even flaunted it at times. I, for one, never wanted to be addicted to anything except life. So when I was born addicted to it, my parents outright refused my doctors to give me the cure.

"It was a big court battle resulting in the ruling that all children being given the cure in utero. In my case, it was different though. The hospital I was born in was given the authority to give me the cure and after I learned of the ruling, I was determined not to become addicted to it ever. So, I left home when I was still young and even moved to another city where I began my schooling in science," Xander orated to his lover hoping that it all made sense to him.

"That was amazing. I had no idea that people on your world were still struggling with the addiction after all these years," Dehvon said sadly.

"My people are stubborn in that sense, Dehvon. But, we are learning to be less pig-headed in our beliefs and views. Here we are," Xander said as they neared a large house. "This is where I 'grew up.' Xander then rang the door bell and waited for someone to come to the door.

"Yes, how can I help you two Starfleet officers?" the stately woman asked.

"Mom, don't you recognize me?" Oroyo asked, his stomach dropping.

"Xander?! What are you doing here?" the woman asked crying.

"I got leave and come home to introduce my new partner to you. Devon Raynah meet Jezari Oroyo, my mother. IS Dad or Jakran here?" Xander asked as she and Dehvon shook hands.

"Your father is off world at the moment with your uncle. Alot has happened to us since you left. Jezari joined Starfleet in hopes of finding you. Your father applied and was accepted as the Federation diplomat for Ornara. I've become a successful writer."

"That's wonderful, Mother. You've really turned your lives around in my absence. I'm impressed. I really am, Mom. I just wish Dad and Jakran were here," Xander said.

"I'm sure he's proud no matter where he is, Xander," Dehvon said reaching out for Xander's hand.

"Jakran left for Starfleet shortly after you graduated, Xander. He wanted something better for his life too, I suppose," Jezari said. "He knew that was where you left for. So, he decided to go after you. How you didn't run into each other at Starfleet Academy, I'll never know."

"It's a big place. I wasn't in San Francisco all the time. I did work off planet too," Xander said. "Has he told you which ship he's posted on? Maybe I can try to get in touch with him over subspace."

"The USS Prometheus. You might try there. But you haven't told me which ship you've been assigned to, Xan," she said.

"I've been assigned to the USS Aurora as Chief Science and Second Officer. That means I'm third in command of a science vessel," he said.
