Status Report

928 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Taking Wing
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: After arrival in Nal'Daya

Daniel took to the ready room while he waited for something to change. The ship was oddly silent while the engineering team worked on repairs, which left him ill at ease. He took to his desk, reviewing new crew allocation reports, with a mug of black tea in hand.

Iona Myhr paused at the doorway making sure he wasn't interrupting on an unlocked door, well groomed earlier in the day other parts of his beard making a resurgence, that's what happens when you short yourself sleep and your regular routine. His clothes however were immaculate and he had of course taken the time to put his piercings in. He had both of his arms full of data PADDs and some of their weirder cousins, he had somehow managed to perch a cup of black coffee in his left hand. "Sorry if I'm interrupting you sir but I have the new duty rosters, we have most but not all of a solution on that, and about twelve other issues require your signature." He didn't dare to take a seat but he did presume enough to leave at least the largest display on the edge of his desk, stepping back to sip his coffee.

Daniel sat back, scooping up the PADD set on his desk. He bid the Operations Manager to take the seat across from him. "So then, what's the new plan for the duty roster? Who's your recommendation for taking third watch?"

"Counselor Ka'Tock. I understand the benefit of having the most senior staff available for day time operations but until but if we extend the XO and I's watches twice a week by four hours we can give them a break so they can assist more crew which is hard to do on the deck. I'm reasonably certain their caseload can handle it, but the decision is really both of yours, I'd like to have a serious handle on helm and a chief of science hammered out entirely but that's all on Starfleet now." He set down his coffee on the edge of the chair and started placing the other PADDs on the Captain's desk in neat stacks, plucking a stylus from behind his ear to set on the desk. Function done he does as the captain bid and seats himself, relaxed his right leg flung over his left knee and his elbow resting on it. "The good news is Lieutenant Nakano and I think we have a fix on that loss of projected yield from the shield generators."

"Ka'Tock's an interesting choice," Daniel said, peering down at the PADD in his hand. "Surprised you wouldn't have recommended a more senior officer. But it's an intriguing thought, one I'll have to look into more closely. At least, when he returns from the planet."

He picked up the second PADD, referencing the engineering report Iona had initially mentioned. "So our shields are back to working order. That's good. Now hopefully we can locate the issue with helm control. I'm not fond of feeling like a puppet with its strings cut."

"Well Chief Counselor often serves as Senior Staff on many vessels, I thought it would be a good opportunity for someone at his rank to take on some extra responsibility at least for a small time." Iona looks still ill at rest despite the professional state of his tone, his leg dropping from his shin and he settles back into his chair but he continued on. "I had an idea on that but I went and stripped it down last night during maintenance. The diagnostic is still running on the scans I took, I'll have results in two hours, but I think the interface is deficient ten percent an exotic matter called bristone. If that is the reason why at least we'll know, the catch is that we dont have any extra bristone to refabricate the part on board." He takes a sip of his coffee.

"I presume you've informed Lt. Nakano?" Daniel smiled - he knew the answer already. Iona tended, in his experience, to prioritize solutions rather than the chain of command. It was appreciated on a workhorse ship like this, but not great in lieu of new crewmembers. "She's not Saul," he warned a breath later. "I don't know yet how she'll take to the Ops Officer just handling things without her input. Same rank now or not."

"It was my name on the duty roster so no I did not. I had no intent to interrupt anything else the LT happened to be up to at the time until I had an answer sir." His tone is even but he says with a small wince anyway. "Though excellent point I'll make sure to leave a message as soon as I can going forward."

"Just go talk to her. You and her have the most reason to forge a professional understanding. Might as well start that sooner rather than later," Daniel set the PADD down. "When we're out of this, I'll talk to Ka'Tock about serving as watch officer for the third shift. And I'll make sure to acknowledge all the other reports you've collected. Is there anything else for the moment?"

"No sir, that was about it anyway unless you want me to hover for your signature on a few things." He stands and starts passing the contents of the various devices arrayed on his desk to his console, most being simple sign here reports, before putting them away.
