Personal Log, Captain Daniel Westphalen, Stardate 94931.32.
The last six months, on assignment for Admiral Hastings while my command was being refit, reminded me of a simpler time. Adjutant work is by no means easy, but it is an environment where my decisions are not scrutinized, my ship's positive attrition not seen as a downside of my command ability, and my personal relationships not called into question.
But by the same token, I value the freedom that shipboard duty affords me. The Aurora, my home for five years, still feels familiar despite all the new faces and system upgrades. She's doing what she's always done - gone out and explored. Perhaps it isn't one of the Intrepid-class cruisers or anything so bold, but she has always brought the crew home.
So as we sit, stricken by some unknown helm control failure, I'm left to stew about the omen this represents. Is this a sign that the Aurora's charmed existence is past?
I do not place much stock in superstition, but sitting in my ready room, the ship's engines no longer pulsing with life, I cannot help but feel ill at ease.
