While originally designed to replace the Oberth class ships as Starfleet's primary science ship class, Starfleet Command continued to wonder if, like other ship classes, the Nova could be designed and outfitted to fit more of a multi-role purpose in order to better serve the needs of Starfleet. Since the class had already proven to be of a sturdy design, the Starfleet R&D team set about building a class variant of the Nova class that would have increased multi-role abilities in order to better meet the needs and that Starfleet was placing upon its star ships. By taking out the wave rider support craft and making better use of the interior space as well as taking full advantage of the latest advances in technology and interior designing, the R&D designers found that the Nova class could indeed be redesigned, adapted and built to better meet the multi-role needs Starfleet was placing on the bulk of its star ships.

While still limited on the majority of its abilities, the new Nova class ships had better systems, including a more advanced warp core that gave the ships quite a bit of a boost in terms of power output, allowing heavier phaser arrays to be installed as well as increasing the shield capabilities. The overall range of the ships was also increased, allowing ships of the new design more time in the field without interruptions such as having to resupply as often. The number of science labs was reduced, however, in order to help make room for the additional support systems that had to be added to the design. Some of the limitations that had originally plagued the class remained, and Starfleet felt that even with the redesign the Nova class would, at best, still be suited best for scientific, support, or limited specialized based missions, although the extended capabilities meant that the newer Novas could also take on some additional roles such as border patrol and even some limited light exploration on a small scale.

To ensure that the new design could meet the demand that Starfleet focus on its primary role of exploration, the new Nova design was packed to the limit with sensors and the labs that remained on board were upgraded to the newest designs available. The computer core was improved upon as well, giving the new design an increased storage capability.

While several ships using the newer redesigned specifications have been built and placed in the field in mostly limited mission roles, Starfleet Command has yet to make an official decision on the newer design, instead waiting for more information about how well the newer designed ships actually do in the field.
