Personality & Traits

General Overview For some logic and the suppression of emotion comes easily. Sevel has had to work hard for it all his life and continues to push himself to maintain the discipline and balance he needs to make it day by day. The mixture of two volatile species has meant he has always had to work that much harder to still his troubled mind and heart. Yet, for all the failures of the past and for the rigorous demands of the present, one would never realize any of this because he appears as collected, confident, and as dispassionate as any other Vulcan.

There are depths of feeling and motivation, traditions and honor, even a touch of humor, that only those who are patient enough will ever come to know. Though he is a capable officer and a brilliant doctor, Sevel doesn’t immediately inspire much loyalty or even approachability. If one comes to his Sickbay expecting him to have any bedside manner at all they’re in for a disappointment. His job is to see to the crew’s health, to make sure they run as efficiently as the engineers expect the engines to. And yet, on occasion, one might catch him at an activity distinctly not logical, participating with his crewmates in shipboard life, and wonder if he does this too just for efficiency or does he actually care.
Strengths & Weaknesses The combination of human and Vulcan genes has put him somewhere in between the two species in terms of biological strengths. About two times stronger than the average human, with faster reflexes, and with a stamina that allows him to go without sleep for up to seven days, Sevel also has the benefit of a superior metabolism and a highly efficient respiratory system. His touch-telepathy is fully trained and Sevel is particularly talented at shielding his mind from intrusion.

Where Sevel’s true strength lies in his dedication. When he puts his mind to a problem he will work at it until he succeeds or finds a solution. Sevel has turned this focused drive on himself in the past, learning to control his emotions to the degree he has and to overcome the challenges of being only half-Vulcan when younger. It serves him well in his career as a doctor and scientist as well, always willing to research and experiment.

Sevel must spend more time meditating to slow his racing thoughts and still his temperamental emotions than is normal. Perhaps because so much of his awareness seems devoted to work Sevel is near clueless when it comes to social grace and nuances. While he never intends to insult, this efficiency may make him hard to get to know or feel like one can trust him.

Sevel also doesn’t take failure very easily. Whether he loses a patient, a medical or scientific paper he wrote is rejected, or when his shipmates point out to him how he neglects their emotional health, it hits him hard. He hasn’t learned to accept failure, only to use it to drive himself even harder. Constantly comparing himself to both humans and Vulcans, Sevel believes he lacks the strengths of both races and rarely recognizes his own accomplishments.

Relying so much on his Vulcan heritage and upbringing, his Vulcan schooling and his Vulcan training, he has left the adaptability and drive that his humanity could offer untapped. Embracing his human half could help give him better insight, understanding, and compassion for others, be it friends, crewmates, or patients. However, it also runs the risk of ruining the carefully hidden balancing act beneath his placid features that keeps his emotions in check.
Ambitions To serve, to learn, to grow, and to master himself.
Hobbies & Interests Reading - Sevel will read just about anything, from fact to fiction, cultural works to technical documents.
Martial Arts - For fitness and discipline, an intermediate practitioner of the Suus Mahna.
Gaming - Kal-toh to exercise his logic, surprisingly open to other games and challenges from others
Forensics - Working towards his next degree, this time in criminal science and pathology

Personal History Sevel never really had a choice on which half of his life would be the path he wanted to follow. Even a Vulcan can make mistakes in affairs of the heart, and though Sevel’s mother never made him feel that he was a mistake himself he had certainly been unplanned for. With his father off on some grand adventure on the edges of known space, he was raised on Vulcan to be a Vulcan. It was easier planned than done.

For most of his childhood, Sevel fell far behind his peers in learning both their academic lessons and their mental training as well. He barely managed to survive his kahs-wan, and struggled against the unspoken but plain disapproval around him. It was only when his mother grew severely ill and came to rely on him when the pressure mounted and, instead of reacting violently as was his norm, Sevel somehow held things together. The crises forced him to begin to gain the control he needed to harness his own strengths.

Not long after his mother was well enough to be on her own, Sevel left for the Vulcan Science Academy. There he completed his equivalent of medical school before turning his application into Starfleet Academy. It was a move that surprised many of his peers because they thought the hot-headed half-Vulcan would always stay close to home. In reality, Sevel couldn’t wait to get away from all the expectations and preconceptions.

Starfleet was a safe haven, but also more of a challenge than Sevel had expected. Given his apparent intelligence, he had thought he would make an easy time of it, but the training was hard in ways he’d never expected. There was always more to being a Starfleet Officer than just having the right answers. Although given a chance to take an accelerated path through the Academy and his residency, Sevel declined, stating that he found it illogical to deny himself the education it would bring him.

Still, Sevel began his steady climb up the ladder of responsibility if not rank, less concerned about the pips on his collar than with his abilities as a healer. His service on board three previous ships of exploration has afforded him a chance to be on a number of away missions, and his time spent on board a space station gave him a chance to study the medical needs of a wide variety of Federation species.

While his records from past superiors note his unwavering dedication to getting the job done, doing it right, and getting his patients back on their feet they don’t often fail to mention how difficult he is to get to know, how standoffish and cantankerous Sevel can be at times. This more than anything is the reason for his slow advancement in rank.
